ISTE Standards for Educators (Permitted Educational Use)

What does being an educator mean?

🏫👩‍🏫👨‍🏫

My reflection about "ISTE STANDARDS FOR EDUCATORS" is ;

Some people think that being an educator is very easy. Their job is telling topics, reading exams, giving assignments, giving points, and so on.

When you become an educator, you are very lucky because of salary, holiday, etc.

Because of these, unfortunately, most people think they should be an educator even if they do not want or have abilities.

Moreover, in most countries, becoming an educator is seen as the last chance to earn money.

In Turkey, some people say if you can't go to any popular faculty, engineering, medicine, etc, you should be an educator at least. Next, some of the people thinking like this hate their jobs after several years, and they reflect this on their jobs. They tell their lesson in a very unwilling and boring way. Hence, the lessons are not efficient for students.

Thinking these makes me very sad because being an educator is more than these.

I believe that some people in Turkey and others have the same idea that being an educator is more than these, and I can see most educators do their job very well.

Empowered Professional

1. Learner

Educators continually improve their practice by learning from and with others, therefore, they pursue professional interests by creating and actively participating in local and global learning networks.

They explore and apply pedagogical approaches made possible by technology and reflect on their effectiveness for supporting improved student learning outcomes, including findings from the learning sciences.

For more detail, you can visit my other posts. Horizon report and Terminology.

In my country, Turkey, I see, unfortunately, some educators stop developing themselves in their area. Every semester, they tell what they told last semester. Some of them even tell exactly the same thing.

They do not endeavor to find a better, more technological, more pedagogical way.

When a person warns them, they can behave badly to this person. If a student says, he/she can get low grades.

However, I can't continue my article without saying that I also see some educators always try to find a better, more technological, more pedagogical way.

They care only how to help learners to better understand their lessons.

I am very lucky to have such teachers.

Not only me but also every student who attends lessons with me think when we attend their lessons, we always learn new things and we listen to lessons carefully.

2. Leader

Educators develop a shared vision for empowered learning with technology by engaging with education stakeholders and then create model it for colleagues adoption.

Educators should be a pioneer to support student empowerment and achievement and to improve teaching and learning and to advocate for equitable access to educational technology.

3. Citizen

While educators inspire students to make positive, socially responsible contributions and exhibit empathetic behavior online that build relationships and community, they help students to be in safe, legal, and ethical practices with digital tools and the protection of intellectual rights and property.

They inspire students to responsibly participate in the digital world and they help students to be safe until they are used to use it.

In my university's lessons, I learned how to discuss online with my classmate. We used "Knowledge Forum".

I found this website very useful. I even suggested we should continue to use this platform with other lessons as a discussion topic.

Learning Catalyst

4. Collaborator

Educators dedicate time to collaborate with not only colleagues to create technologically learning experiences but also students to discover and use new digital resources and diagnose and troubleshoot technology issues.

Demonstrate cultural competency when communicating with co-collaborators who are in student learning.

Use collaborative tools to expand students’ authentic, real-world learning experiences by engaging virtually with experts and students.

When we look at the very successful countries in terms of the education system, we see there is a network.

The network includes lessons, parents, teachers, students, and so on.

What I mean is that teachers evaluate student's performance and then they talk to them. If their process of learning is bad, they try to fix it with students. If they can't do this, they go to an expert for help. While they do this, they also talk to the student's parents.

If the situation is different, which means the student's process of learning is good, teachers again go to an expert for help. However, in this situation, they want students to keep going and improve this. They try to create a plan for students. While they do this, they also talk to the student's parents.

For example, if students have the potential to go to a very good university, they evaluate this.

5. Designer

Educators use technology to create or use personalized learning experiences to better help students during the process of learning within instructional design principles.

Educational platforms including AI system can analyze students and then it can help where they make mistake more. In this way, the percentage of students' achievement increases.

This semester, in one of my lessons, we use such a system. I analyzed the system and I found it very useful. As I mentioned above, it shows a hint or keyword about topics when I make mistake in my assignments,pop-quiz, test, etc. I assume my teachers can see my process. Besides, I can watch the lesson's video to study myself.

6. Facilitator

Educators facilitate learning with technology to support student achievement of the 2016 ISTE Standards for Students.

To achieve this,  in digital platforms, virtual environments, hands-on maker spaces, or in the field, under control, students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning goals and outcomes in both independent and group settings.

Educators want students to know creative thinking to solve problems, hence, they create problems and they also show them some models to nurture their creativity.

In Turkey, I don't think our education system can get a higher point for the 2016 ISTE.It has got some issues. As it is mentioned in the beginning, one of the reasons is that becoming an educator is seen as the last chance to earn money , therefore, when they start to hate their jobs, we lose potentially successful students.

To change this, we should start to not see becoming an educator as the last chance to earn money but we should see becoming an educator as one of the key jobs for shaping the future.

7. Analyst

Educators use technology in the process of students' learning to assess students' competency in achieving their learning goals and give timely feedback to students, parents, and education stakeholders to build student self-direction via assessment data.
