    Hello there,
in this story, I am going to talk about how I made my folded object, which is Maiden's Tower, for 3D Modelling and Design at the FabLab - From Origami at Bremen University.

First of all, let's begin with some information about Maiden's Tower.

What is Maiden's Tower?

"The Maiden's Tower (TurkishKız Kulesi), also known as Leander's Tower (Tower of Leandros) since the medieval Byzantine period, is a tower on a small islet at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus strait, 200 m (220 yd) from the coast of ĂśskĂĽdar in IstanbulTurkey

What is Folded Object?

Folded object means creating art from folding materials by seeing the possibilities of work with her/his own imagination in a certain way. For example, origami.

Where do you find folded?

You can find folded objects almost everywhere. Airbag folding and 4D Printing are examples of folding in engineering.

Where can you find the folded object in architecture?

Images are from my blender project.

Folded structures

The building is a combination of Ottoman and Byzantine architecture.

    Ottoman architecture

It first emerged in northwestern Anatolia in the late 13th century[1] and developed from earlier Seljuk Turkish architecture, with influences from Byzantine and Iranian architecture along with other architectural traditions in the Middle East.[2][3][4][5][6]

This style was a mixture of native Turkish tradition and influences from the Hagia Sophia, resulting in monumental mosque buildings focused around a high central dome with a varying number of semi-domes.[6][5][7]

    Byzantine architecture

Palatine chapel of the Norman Kings of Sicily.
It was built with a Byzantine architectural approach
and the mosaics were made by Byzantine artists.

This new style with exotic domes and richer mosaics would come to be known as "Byzantine" before it traveled west to Ravenna and Venice and as far north as Moscow. Most of the churches and basilicas have high-riding domes, which created vast open spaces at the centers of churches, thereby heightening the light. The round arch is a fundamental of Byzantine style.

What are the technologies that I use?

  • Blender
  • Pepakura Designer 5

Steps to build

  1. You should create your 3D model in Blender.
  2. After you finish your model, you should get .obj export to use it in Pepakura Designer 5
  3. Get vector pdf export to use it in the laser cutter
  4. Use glue to connect each part
You can learn about my 3D model and my blender project on my GitHub page. You can click this link.
